Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, has been plunged into mourning following the sudden de@th of a final-year student, Emem Okon Jimmy, from the Department of Journalism and Media Studies.
Emem reportedly passed away in her sleep on Thursday, July 17, 2025. However, her lifeless body was not discovered until the evening of the next day, Friday, July 18, by concerned neighbours.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke anonymously, the deceased had been in good health the previous day and even had dinner with fellow tenants at her student lodge before retiring to bed. Concerns were raised when she wasn’t seen outside all day Friday. Around 10:00 p.m., the lodge caretaker raised an alarm, prompting other residents to investigate.
After failed attempts to access her room, the tenants broke through the ceiling and found her body lying face down on the bed, covered with her bedspread and clutching her mobile phone. Bl%%d was reportedly seen coming from her nose, staining the mattress—suggesting a possible medical emergency.
Her elder brother was immediately contacted by the caretaker. He traveled from Uyo to Ikot Ekpene and took her body to a mortuary.
During a candlelight procession held ahead of her burial on Saturday, July 25, 2025, the Head of the Department, Dr. Inemesit Umoren, offered words of comfort to grieving students. He encouraged them to remain strong, reminding them that only God understands why such things happen. He also advised students to prioritize regular medical checkups while managing their academic responsibilities.
