In 2019, a 20-year-old from Australia stepped onto a stretch of unclaimed land between Croatia and Serbia and declared it a new country. He called it the Free Republic of Verdis and named himself its first president.
Daniel Jackson discovered the 7 square kilometer area known as Gornja Siga, which had been left out of official border treaties. After planting a green and yellow flag, he announced plans for an eco-friendly micro-nation focused on renewable energy and nature conservation. Although no government recognizes Verdis, Jackson created a constitution, began issuing digital citizenships, and attracted a small online community of supporters.
For now, Verdis exists more in spirit than in soil.
