A senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has made startling revelations about the party’s internal processes during the run-up to the 2023 elections.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV, the PDP chieftain disclosed details about how the choice of vice presidential candidate was handled, accusing the leadership of disregarding party principles and sowing division.
George alleged that the leadership undermined the very values on which the PDP was founded. “They breached the very foundation for which this party was established,” he said.
“If they breached it, then it was for them to now roll up their hands of fellowship.” His comments suggest long-standing dissatisfaction within the party’s ranks.
In his account, George revealed that a special subcommittee was tasked with interviewing and screening possible running mates for the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
According to him, the committee’s recommendation was overwhelmingly in favor of Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike.
“At that time, 13 out of 17 voted that Wike should be the running mate to Atiku,” George stated during the televised interview.
He insisted that the report of the subcommittee still exists and that it showed a clear preference for Wike.
However, George said the party leadership rejected this recommendation. “They got there. The report is still there.
They refused to listen to that. ‘Oh, we can’t work with him. We can’t work with him,’” he recalled, suggesting that personal differences overshadowed the committee’s democratic decision.
The veteran politician further criticized the choice of Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the eventual vice presidential nominee.
