Amaewule: You Made Us Believe We Were Fighting a Just Fight - Hon. Franklin Uchenna Nwabochi

The House of Assembly has resumed plenary in Port Harcourt after six months of emergency rule in Rivers State. Lawmakers have hailed this as a new chapter for democracy in the state. The session began by adopting the results and actions from the last sitting, which was on March 17, 2025, the final day of regular business before President Bola Tinubu proclaimed a state of emergency.

They returned, members argued, to show that they were resilient and recommitted to governance. Speaker Martins Amaewhule was praised for his leadership during the crisis by Hon. Franklin Uchenna Nwabochi of the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni I Constituency. According to him:

“Amaewule, you made us believe we were fighting a just fight.” During the political maelstrom, Nwabochi said, parliamentarians found strength in Amaewhule’s bravery, and the people of Rivers were comforted that their representatives would stay steady. Others in the House agreed with him, stating that the Speaker’s will to safeguard the Assembly was the driving force behind the chamber’s ability to remain united.

Lawmakers demanded that Governor Siminalayi Fubara appoint commissioner-nominees during the session in order to establish a fresh State Executive Council. Additionally, they requested that he submit a new annual budget and assured him that they would examine large expenditures made during the emergency period.

Members of the Assembly ended by promising to support the peace pact and collaborate with the governor to bring prosperity and security to Rivers State
