Plateau Lawmaker Allegedly Involved in Contract Fraud Case Refunds N45m, Seeks Lifting of Arrest Warrant

Adamu Aliyu, a member of the Plateau State House of Assembly representing Jos North-North Constituency, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to withdraw an arrest warrant issued against him over alleged contract fra¥d.

Justice Emeka Nwite had on September 12 declared Aliyu wanted after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) told the court he repeatedly ignored its invitations. The judge also directed security agencies and private citizens to arrest and hand him over to the ICPC.

In a motion filed on September 18, Aliyu, through his lawyer M.B. Abdullahi, argued that the order was “oppr+ssive, overreaching and unnecessary,” insisting he had since reported to the commission. He said he only learned of the warrant through media reports and immediately presented himself at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja.

The lawmaker further claimed he had refunded N45 million to the petitioner, an amount higher than the N43.8 million he allegedly received, accusing the ICPC of concealing this fact from the court.

His application stressed that he has shown good faith, poses no flight risk as a serving legislator, and risks “actual physical h@rm” if the warrant remains in force.
