Chinese researchers have unveiled a breakthrough medical adhesive, “Bone-02,” capable of healing bone fractures within minutes—an innovation that could replace traditional s¥rgeries requiring metal plates, screws, and lengthy recovery times.
The glue, developed by a team of scientists and tested at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, can bond fractured bones in just three minutes, even in bl++d-rich environments.
Lin Xianfeng, the hospital’s associate chief orthopedic surgeon, said the treatment involves a single injection and provides precise fixation with minimal incisions.
In one case, a patient with a wrist fracture was treated through a 3 cm incision and healed within minutes. Conventional s¥rgery would have required implants and a second operation to remove them later. A three-month follow-up confirmed the patient’s complete recovery without complications.
Inspired by oysters’ ability to cling to wet, salty surfaces, researchers designed “Bone-02” to mimic the mollusk’s bio-glue, which resists pressure and erosion in moist, unstable conditions.
Tests showed the adhesive can withstand forces exceeding 400 pounds and is naturally absorbed by the body as the bone heals, removing the need for implant removal s¥rgery.
Early studies also suggest the glue lowers infection risks compared to metal fixation methods, potentially marking a major shift in orthopedic treatment worldwide.
