Youths Shun Anambra Election, Opt For Football And Business Activities Instead

As the Anambra State governorship election takes place, many residents in parts of Awka, the state capital, appeared indifferent to the voting exercise, choosing instead to continue with their daily routines.

While a few small markets opened early in the morning, several young men were spotted engaging in street football matches, showing little concern for the election activities around them.

However, at areas such as Okpuno and Mgbakwu near Awka, some voters gradually turned out for accreditation. In Uruotulu, Awka, a mobile town crier was seen driving around with a loudspeaker, urging residents to come out and cast their votes, repeatedly announcing, “Come out and vote, wherever you are.”

As of 8:54 a.m., voting had not yet begun at Polling Units 004 and 005, Umuobi Village Hall, Awkuzu, though several electorates were already in queues awaiting the arrival of INEC officials.

Security operatives were stationed around the venue to ensure a peaceful process, with one officer confirming that “everything is in order” and that there were “no security threats so far.”

Meanwhile, business activities near polling centres began to thrive as the morning progressed. Provision shops and food vendors took advantage of the situation to serve both voters and onlookers.

A food seller, Justina Oyibo, explained that she came out to make sales since voters would need to eat, while another vendor, Grace Igwebuike, noted that many left home early without breakfast and would likely buy food after voting.

The election, which features major political contenders vying for the state’s top seat, continues across polling units in Anambra amid varying levels of voter enthusiasm.
