A new development has emerged in the controversy surrounding a video shared by Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, which appeared to show substandard accommodation ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match in Morocco.

The video quickly went viral, drawing criticism from fans who described the facility as “unfit” for the national team. Some likened it to a school hostel, sparking intense debate online about the treatment of Nigerian players abroad.

Iwobi, however, clarified his intentions, stating, “I didn’t say anything; I just showed the video,” suggesting that his post was misinterpreted.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) responded, noting that the Super Eagles are staying at RIVE Hotel, and the viral footage actually showed an old building visible from the hotel window. The NFF explained that RIVE was selected for its proximity to the team’s training ground and the stadium in Rabat.

With preparations now fully focused on the high-stakes World Cup qualifier against Morocco, the lodging controversy serves as a reminder of the impact and potential misinterpretation of viral social media content.
