An aspiring Nigerian lawyer in Calgary, Charles Ikenwe
An aspiring Nigerian lawyer in Calgary, Charles Ikenwe, has been found guilty of s+xual as+a¥lt against a woman working within the justice system. Ikenwe, formerly a lawyer from Asaba, Delta State, moved to Canada after marrying a Canadian woman who sponsored his immigration and spent thousands of dollars bringing him over.
Justice Marilyn Slawinsky rejected Ikenwe’s claim that the encounter in his home two years ago was consensual. At the time, he was completing his articling requirements. Defence counsel argued the complainant fabricated the allegation after learning Ikenwe was married, but the judge noted the woman didn’t even know his last name when she first reported the incident on Oct. 25, 2023.
The complainant testified she went to Ikenwe’s home for reasons other than s+x and was made to wait until another occupant left — a person she believed was the husband of the couple Ikenwe lived with, but who was actually his wife. Justice Slawinsky found Ikenwe’s version not credible.
“I believe the complainant’s version of what occurred,” the judge said. “She did not consent to the s+xual activity.”
The case has caused deep distress for Ikenwe’s wife, who had supported him financially and emotionally to move to Canada. Sources say this abusive behavior had been ongoing for years despite repeated warnings from his wife, family, and their Redeem Church pastor, ultimately leading to this final incident and criminal conviction.
A presentence report was ordered at the defence’s request. Ikenwe remains free, with sentencing scheduled for Dec. 5.
