Nigerian entertainer D’banj has opened up about his artistic philosophy and business evolution, revealing that he never viewed himself strictly as a singer or rapper.
Speaking on journalist Seun Okinbaloye’s The Micon Podcast, D’banj said he identified early on as an “entertainer,” a mindset he believes shaped his trajectory in the industry.
According to him, this perspective freed him from the pressure of being boxed into a specific musical category.
“I realized something early; I never called myself a singer or a rapper. I said I’m an entertainer — which means I don’t have to sing to entertain,” he said.
D’banj added that the success of his global hit Oliver Twist validated his belief in entertainment beyond vocals. “Oliver Twist proved what I had always believed. My life has been different for a long time,” he said.
He also noted that top global stars build wealth through broader ventures, not music alone.
“There is no artiste on the Forbes list who made it through music alone. It takes business, vision, and platforms bigger than the art itself,” he argued.
The Kokomaster highlighted his own venture, the C.R.E.A.M (Creative, Reality, Entertainment, Arts, Music) platform, claiming it is now valued at $3 billion.
“My C.R.E.A.M platform is worth $3 billion — and that’s the real game,” he said.
D’banj’s comments underscore his long-standing emphasis on entertainment entrepreneurship and the need for artistes to expand beyond traditional music revenue streams.
