There is No Society Without Crime — Akpabio Says, as Senate Debates Fresh Killings and Abduction

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday called for perspective amid rising insecurity, stressing that no country — including the United States — is completely free of crime.

Akpabio made the comments while presiding over plenary during a tense debate on two tragic incidents that occurred within 24 hours: the k+llings of Brigadier-General Uba Musa in Borno State, and the abd¥ction of 25 schoolgirls along with the k+lling of a vice principal in Kebbi State.

As senators worked to harmonise their resolutions, Akpabio cautioned against despair, citing the size of the country and the heavy demands on security agencies.

“We sympathise deeply with the families affected, but we must remember that Nigeria is a very large country,” he said.

“It is not even possible to deploy one policeman to each polling unit during elections. Our security agencies are overstretched and find themselves in places they shouldn’t ordinarily be,” he added.

Akpabio noted that crime is a universal challenge, saying: “There is no society without cr+me. Even the almighty America records crime on a daily basis. But we must continue to do our best to minimise it.”

After adopting their resolutions, senators moved into a closed-door session to continue discussions on the nation’s worsening security situation.
