Bangkok Temple Staff Shocked as ‘D+ad’ Woman Found Alive Minutes Before Cremation

Staff at a Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Bangkok were stunned after discovering that a woman believed to be d+ad was actually alive just moments before her scheduled cremation.

Pairat Soodthoop, general manager of the Wat Rat Prakhong Tham temple, told the Associated Press he was “startled” when he heard faint knocking coming from inside the coffin as preparations were underway. When he asked for the coffin to be opened, the 65-year-old woman was found slowly opening her eyes and tapping weakly on the wooden interior. “She must have been knocking for quite some time,” he said.

The woman’s brother had earlier informed temple staff that local officials had pronounced her d+ad. However, Soodthoop noted that the family had not presented a formal d+ath certificate, and he had been explaining the process of obtaining one when the knocking interrupted the discussion.

Realising the woman was still alive, the temple’s abbot immediately ordered staff to rush her to a hospital. Doctors later confirmed she was s¥ffering from severe hypoglycaemia a dangerously low bl%%d sugar level but had not gone into cardiac or respiratory arrest.

According to her brother, the woman had been bedridden for two years. When her condition worsened on Saturday, she appeared to stop breathing, prompting the family to assume she had d+ed. They travelled nearly 500km from Phitsanulok province to Bangkok for what they believed would be her cremation.

Local reports have described the event as one of the most shocking near-mistakes ever recorded at a Thai temple, with staff expressing deep relief that the faint knock was heard just in time.
