Troops Arrest Two Herders for Farmland D+struction in Benue

In a sustained effort to protect farmers and safeguard food security during the peak harvest season, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing and destroying crops on community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State.

Spokesman for OPWS, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, confirmed the development, noting that the incident occurred on 20 November 2025. According to him, troops deployed at Zongo Akiki were on a routine farm-protection patrol when they intercepted the herders, who had reportedly led their cattle into cultivated fields belonging to local farmers.

He said the timely intervention by the soldiers prevented further destr+ction of crops and a possible clash between the herders and the affected community.

“The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action,” Zubairu stated.

The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking laws into their own hands during disputes. He stressed that vi%lence or reprisal att@cks only escalate tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.

Gara also called on herders to remain law-abiding, refrain from actions that thr+aten stability, and respect established regulations guiding grazing activities.

He reaffirmed OPWS’s commitment to protecting farmlands and creating a safe environment for all legitimate economic activities to thrive.
