Nigerian entertainer Speed Darlington opened up about his upbringing, love life, and personal philosophy during a recent appearance on the Honest Bunch podcast.
Darlington described his privileged childhood, saying, “I was the only child of my mother. For Christmas, I’d get at least three to four clothes. I had more toy guns than anyone in our yard. My childhood was awesome. Every penny she made was on me, so I didn’t really feel the need to carry the world on my head or outgrind anyone.”
He explained that his financial independence delayed his pursuit of traditional adult milestones. “Private school after private school, so all bookings money was on me. When I decided I needed a house, a car, a wife, I was slightly in my 30s because I had no competition it was only me. All her money was mine, so there was no urgency in my 20s,” he said.
On matters of the heart, Darlington admitted that he has never experienced a first love. “There was one I nearly married, but I lost her because I was too honest. I told her I’m polygamous and would marry another wife,” he recalled. He added that his elder brother advised him against revealing such intentions: “My big brother was like, ‘You don’t do things like that, you bring them in, get them pregnant.’”
Reflecting on parenthood and human nature, Darlington concluded, “There must be a kind of chemical imbalance in our brains as persons to say I like load and I want to carry load. Children are load.”
