Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited Martins Street, Lagos Island, on Thursday following a major fire that broke out late Wednesday at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House in Balogun Market.
The governor confirmed that there were no fatalities, although seven people sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. He announced that a committee led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, will oversee the demolition of affected structures in the coming days.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to remain safety conscious during the dry season and advised them to stay clear of the area. He also assured that all first responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Management Agency, Nigeria Police, Federal Fire Service, FRSC, and LASTMA, will remain on site to prevent a recurrence and support affected traders.
More than ten buildings were impacted by the fire, with all shops on Martins Street closed and adjoining streets cordoned off, bringing business activities in the area to a halt.
