“I have never been a card-carrying member of any political party, but I will be a card-carrying member of the ADC” — Activist Aisha Yesufu leaves LP for ADC

Civil rights activist Aisha Yesufu has declared her intention to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking the first time she would become a card-carrying member of any political party.

Yesufu made the declaration during a public event attended by key political figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Gregory Obi, former Senate President David Mark, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

Addressing the gathering, Yesufu emphasised national unity in the face of shared challenges, saying Nigerians are already united by common problems such as insecurity, unemployment and governance failures.

“We are all united with the insecurity that affects every part of the country. We are all united with the lack of employment. We are all united with the things that are not working,” she said.

She urged Nigerians to reject narratives of division, noting that the country’s challenges cut across ethnic, religious and regional lines. According to her, collective action is required to rebuild the nation and make it a country citizens can be proud of.

Yesufu said the decision to align with the ADC was symbolic, describing the moment as one for serious national engagement rather than celebration.

“There is a reason why there is no party there. It simply means this is not the time for jollification. This is the time for Nigerians to lead the way,” she said, while repeatedly calling on the ADC to “arise and shine.”

In a direct address to Peter Obi, whom she described as her leader, Yesufu made her position clear on partisan politics.

“I have never been in any political party. I have refused to be a card-carrying member of any political party. But as my leader, I give you my word that I will proudly be a card-carrying member of ADC,” she declared.

She also reflected on past moments of struggle with political leaders present at the event, recalling shared experiences with David Mark and Aminu Tambuwal during earlier pro-democracy engagements.
