Pastor Lawrence Onochie has sparked discussion with comments cautioning men against allowing their wives to bear the financial responsibilities of the home for extended periods.
In a sermon, the cleric said prolonged financial dependence on women could negatively affect marriages, regardless of how supportive or godly the wife may be.
“I don’t care how supportive your wife is. If she carries the burden—the financial burden of the house for too long—it will take its toll on your marriage,” Onochie said.

He further argued that women are not designed to remain in that role indefinitely. “I don’t care how supportive, how godly she is. I don’t care how much she loves you. Why? She’s not built for it. And unfortunately, most women don’t have the wisdom required in that phase of their relationship,” he stated.
According to Onochie, while women may experience real stress in such situations, they often struggle to communicate it in ways that strengthen relationships. “They are feeling genuine stress, but they don’t know how to communicate it well so that their communication can build, not d+stroy,” he said, adding that men are especially vulnerable during financially challenging periods.

The pastor stressed that men must be intentional about financial growth and embrace their responsibility as providers, noting that scripture places that obligation on them. He encouraged his congregation to seek financial wisdom, recommending his teaching series “God and Money,” which he said is available for free on his ministry’s website.
