Legal expert Chetam Nwala has alleged that there was an earlier political arrangement involving key figures in Rivers State before recent changes in the APC governorship race.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, Nwala claimed that the original plan within the political camp linked to Minister Nyesom Wike was for George Kelly to emerge as the governorship candidate of the APC, while Kingsley Chinda would fly the flag of the PDP in Rivers State.
According to him, the situation changed after the Supreme Court judgment affecting the political crisis in the PDP. He said the earlier plan was immediately dropped, leading to Chinda’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate after the withdrawal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, George Kelly, and Tonye Cole from the race.
Nwala argued that the political developments in Rivers State should worry Nigerians because, in his view, one individual now appears to have influence over both the ruling and opposition parties in the state.
He also questioned Chinda’s political position, noting that the lawmaker still serves as the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives despite reports of his defection to the APC.
Nwala described the situation as a dangerous style of politics that could weaken democratic values in the country.
In his words, “The plan they had in mind was that George Kelly, would have been the APC candidate of Rivers State while Chinda would be the candidate of the PDP, but when the Supreme Court judgement came out, what they did was to abandon the project overnight.”
