Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has called for greater appreciation of the sacrifices made by Nigerian military personnel, saying every Nigerian should have the opportunity to experience military training.
Musa said such training would give people a deeper understanding of endurance, discipline and the physical and mental demands soldiers face while protecting the country.
According to him, military training exposes participants to difficult conditions, including hunger, exhaustion and prolonged periods without sleep, helping them understand the level of endurance required of soldiers.
He explained that military personnel may be required to continue moving for kilometres despite extreme fatigue, noting that such hardships are part of the sacrifices involved in protecting others and the nation.
Musa likened the sacrifice of soldiers to the biblical principle that “there is no greater act of friendship than giving one’s life for another person,” stressing that Nigerian soldiers put their lives at risk to keep the country secure.
He said it was painful to see some members of the public insult military personnel or suggest that the security challenges confronting the country should continue.
According to him, soldiers, like other Nigerians, also want an end to insecurity and a return to peace.
Musa also highlighted the personal sacrifices of military personnel, noting that those deployed for security operations are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and family members who leave their loved ones behind to serve in difficult conditions.
