Family protests, demands justice as man allegedly dies in police custody after unlawful arrest in Lagos

The family of one Ejioye Omolola, on Sunday, May 9, took to the streets of Ikorodu, Lagos State, to protest and the demand justice, after he allegedly died in police custody.

It was gathered that the deceased was allegedly unlawfully arrested by the police on Sunday, May 2, around 8 p.m at Ladega area of Ikorodu following a robbery incident in which a commercial motorcyclist was killed.

According to reports, a police team stormed the area after the incident and while people fled from the scene, Omolola, who was with his girlfriend at the time was arrested. He was detained in Igbogbo Police Station till Tuesday morning, May 4, when his case was transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Adekunle.

The deceased counsel in a statement on Sunday, May 9, alleged that all efforts by the family to secure his release proved abortive. He was said to have died in police custody on May 7, following alleged severe torture by the officers in charge.

“Having seen clearly that our client died unprecedentedly in the hands of the police, we are hereby requesting an autopsy report on the cause of the death of our client. We are also requesting that police release the corpse to the family for befitting burial for our clients,” the statement reads in part.
