There is a massive protest currently ongoing at the Maingate of University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, leading to a disruption of commercial activities in the area.

It was gathered that the protest is as a result of the alleged increase in fees for late payment by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami. According to a source, “Our VC has added N20k to fees for late payment just after 3 weeks of resumption and failure to pay with the increment by Friday, will lead to forfeiting admission.

The initial school fee was N70k before but she added a sum of N20k for the 100-level entry students. A lot of students are yet to pay. Even the students’ union body approached her for a dialogue but the VC refused to heed leading to the protest we have today.

The entire Benin-Lagos federal road is on standstill at the moment due to the protest. We urge the relevant authorities to wade into the matter.”
