Former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has renewed calls for generational change in Nigeria’s political leadership, highlighting the need for fresh ideas and younger leaders.
Speaking during channels TV engagement, Baba-Ahmed noted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had been contesting for the presidency since he (Datti) was undergoing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He emphasized that Nigeria can no longer rely on long-standing political figures.

“Atiku started contesting when I was doing my NYSC. There is a need for a new generation of Nigerian leaders,” Baba-Ahmed said. He further added, “There is a whole new generation that are waiting for a new leader to lead Nigeria. There are new generation leaders that are capable of solving Nigerians’ problems.”
Baba-Ahmed stressed that Nigeria’s persistent challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, and weak institutions, require fresh leadership with energy, innovative ideas, and a deep understanding of modern governance. He argued that while experience in politics is valuable, it should not prevent competent young leaders from taking charge.

He urged Nigerians to prioritize accountability and competence over loyalty to established political figures, insisting that meaningful change depends on deliberate inclusion of a new generation in governance. Baba-Ahmed also encouraged young Nigerians to remain politically engaged, highlighting that their active participation is key to shaping the country’s leadership and future.
