Former lawmaker Dapo Lam-Adesina has alleged that Femi Gbajabiamila’s failed speakership bid in 2015 was in fact President Bola Tinubu’s battle to win, and that the effort was ultimately undermined because then-President Muhammadu Buhari chose not to throw his weight behind Tinubu’s preferred candidate.
Speaking in an interview with Edmund Obilo, Lam-Adesina said, “My loyalty to Femi Gbajabiamila wasn’t solely because it was Femi Gbajabiamila. It was because of Asiwaju Tinubu. Femi Gbajabiamila was Tinubu’s candidate. So my loyalty was transferred to Femi Gbajabiamila. And I stood by him till the end. Asiwaju lost that battle and he pulled back and planned again,” he said.
Lam-Adesina stated that what defined Tinubu was not the loss itself but what came after it was a pattern of strategic retreat, self-reflection, and calculated re-engagement that had become the hallmark of his political career.
He described Tinubu as a man who had never lost an election, who had made governors and presidents, and who had ultimately become president himself after years of installing others in power.
According to him, Tinubu’s journey offered lessons so rich that he believed there should be a formal institution dedicated to studying his strategies and political character.
