THE state government has placed a ban on the use of styrofoam and other single-use plastics.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued the ban on Sunday, January 21, in an announcement made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

Expressing the necessity of the ban, Wahab highlighted the alarming environmental impact caused by single-use plastics, particularly the non-biodegradable styrofoam.

According to the Commissioner in a tweet, “Following the menace which single-use plastics, especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam, are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government (@followlasg) through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (@LasgMOE) is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State with immediate effect.”

This proactive measure by the Lagos State government underscores its commitment to combating environmental degradation and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable future. The ban is expected to significantly reduce the adverse impact of single-use plastics on the state’s ecosystems and contribute to global efforts in curbing plastic pollution.

Reacting to the ban, environmentalists and residents applauded Governor Sanwo-Olu on the decision, saying it is a crucial step towards mitigating the long-term consequences of plastic waste and preserving the natural beauty of Lagos.

They added that the move aligns with international trends, where governments and communities are increasingly recognising the urgent need to address the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics.

The ban is not only a commendable step towards protecting the environment but also serves as an example for other regions to follow suit in adopting responsible and eco-friendly practices.
