Voodoos exist in Africa And They Work— Actress Iyabo Ojo insist

Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo has defended Nollywood’s use of traditional themes and special effects, saying African filmmakers are simply reflecting the realities, beliefs, and imagination rooted in the continent’s culture.

Speaking during a conversation with British-Nigerian radio presenter Remi Burgz, Ojo reacted to criticisms that some Nollywood productions are not taken seriously because of their visual effects and supernatural storylines.

According to the actress, African storytelling cannot be separated from local beliefs and traditions, including spirituality and folklore, which frequently influence plots in Nollywood films.

“Well, it’s Africa, and we have to tell our story the way it is, no matter how much we want to westernize it or modernize it. There are voodoos in Africa, and they work,” she said.

Ojo added that filmmakers should not shy away from portraying cultural realities and imaginative concepts on screen, stressing that Nollywood’s creativity often shines through its storytelling style and unique themes.

She also noted that while some special effects may appear exaggerated or humorous, they still reflect the limitless imagination of Nigerian storytellers and the industry’s determination to project African narratives to global audiences.
