Gabonese international striker Aaron Boupendza has d+ed at the age of 28 after falling from the 11th floor of a building in China, according to a statement released by the Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot) on Wednesday.

Boupendza was playing for Zhejiang FC in the Chinese Super League at the time of his de@th. Fegafoot described him as “a great striker who left his mark on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” notably during the 2021 tournament in Cameroon where Gabon reached the round of 16.

The cause of the fall remains unclear, and an official investigation is underway in China.

Gabon’s president-elect Brice Oligui Nguema expressed deep sorrow over the news, calling Boupendza “a talented forward who brought pride to Gabonese football.”

Born in Moanda, Gabon, Boupendza began his European career with Bordeaux in 2016 and played for several clubs across France, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the U.S., and Romania. He rose to prominence in 2020 with Hatayspor in Turkey, where he was the Super Lig’s top scorer for the 2020–21 season.

Fegafoot extended heartfelt condolences to Boupendza’s family and the wider Gabonese football community.
