Nigerian Highlife artist, Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has reflected on his transition from a producer to a singer.

He acknowledged rapper Mr Raw for playing an important role in his career, noting that his encounter with the rapper made him learn music production professionally.

Speaking in a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, the ‘N’abania’ crooner said he was charging N5,000 per beat as a producer but Mr Raw again encouraged him to transition to singing.

“From learning studio productions, I became a producer. It was so easy because I was already an instrumentalist. From there, I started getting gigs as a producer. I used to charge N5,000 per beat,” he recalled.

“Some weekends, Mr Raw would ask me to be his backup singer at his shows. I left the bar where I was playing live music and started following Mr Raw. Everything changed when I saw people vibing to a chorus I did for one Mr Raw’s songs.

“I told myself that if I can do the chorus, it means I can put a song together. I should start creating my own. Mr Raw was the guy that opened my eyes to what being an artist is.”

Flavour is popularly known across Africa and the world for his hit song Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)’.

He released his self-titled debut album ‘N’abania’ in 2005.
