A LagFerry boat, Igbega Eko, caught fire while en route to Victoria Island, causing panic among passengers, some of whom sustained injuries while trying to escape.

Confirming the incident, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) told Tribune Online on Thursday morning that its officers were on-site to prevent the fire from spreading. “There was a bang, and the boat was suddenly engulfed in flames. The exact cause is still unknown, but investigations are ongoing,” a NIWA official stated.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) also acknowledged the incident, revealing that four passengers suffered minor injuries and are receiving medical care.

In a statement, LASWA said the fire broke out around 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu. Emergency responders, including LASWA’s team, LAGFERRY staff, and boat operators, quickly intervened to contain the situation. Fortunately, all passengers and crew were safely evacuated.

LASWA assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and that safety measures will be reinforced. Ferry services remain operational, and passengers are encouraged to adhere to safety guidelines while using the waterways.
