Pastor Tunde Bakare, founder of The Citadel Global Community Church, has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of leading Nigeria into t¥ranny and deepening the nation’s economic and political crisis.

In a State of the Nation address delivered at his church in Oregun, Lagos, the former APC presidential aspirant condemned the worsening poverty, hardship, and political instability in the country, particularly the situation in Rivers State.

Bakare described Nigeria’s condition as more than just economic hardship, stating that the nation’s spirit has been br%ken. He warned that the rising frustration among the poor could tr+gger serious unrest unless decisive and pragmatic actions are taken.

Drawing from the biblical account of Joseph in Egypt, Bakare urged Tinubu to emulate the humility and wisdom of Pharaoh, who averted crisis by seeking counsel and acting responsibly. He stressed that Nigeria needs such humility and foresight in leadership now more than ever.

Since January 2025, Bakare noted, the country has witnessed increasing authoritarianism, ab¥se of power, and a weakening of democratic institutions. He accused government leaders of lacking the character required to navigate the country through its current challenges.

“What we have seen since the beginning of the year is a descent into t¥ranny and brazen ab¥se of power,” he said, accusing those in power of deliberately undermining Nigeria’s constitutional governance.

He also criticised the National Assembly for enabling executive overreach, contrasting it with previous assemblies that stood firm against undemocratic practices.

Using Rivers State as an example, Bakare described the state’s political crisis as a theatre controlled by Abuja and evidence of federal interference and democratic decay.
