Former President Donald Trump raised eyebrows Monday by joking about running for a third term during remarks at a House Republicans’ retreat at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami.

While his comments were met with laughter, they continue to fuel speculation about his ambitions.

“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure,” Trump said. “I think I’m not allowed to run again.” He went on to ask Speaker Mike Johnson, who was on stage with him, “Am I allowed to run again? Mike, I better not get you involved in that.” Johnson, a former constitutional lawyer, chuckled along with other Republicans in the audience.

The remarks came days after Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., introduced a proposal to amend the Constitution and lift the two-term limit on U.S. presidents. “President Trump has proven himself to be the only figure capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness,” Ogles said. “This amendment would allow him to serve three terms, ensuring the bold leadership our nation needs.”

Though the proposed amendment has not advanced in Congress, Trump’s repeated musings about extending his presidency keep drawing attention, with critics dismissing the comments as mere theatrics while his supporters see them as a rallying cry for continued leadership.
