A s+x-for-marks scandal has erupted at Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School in Lagos, involving Further Mathematics teacher Mr. Egberongbe Adegbenga Toheeb, who allegedly ab¥sed at least 11 girls. Audio recordings obtained by SaharaReporters reveal victims recounting how the teacher manipulated them with promises of better grades. One student described how he co+rced her into meeting at a hotel, while another escaped an attempted a+sa¥lt in a classroom. The teacher, hired directly by the principal rather than the government, reportedly preyed on students for years.
The scandal broke earlier this year, thanks to NYSC corps member and alumnus Clement James, who reported it to multiple agencies, including the Lagos State Ministry of Education and the Domestic and S+x¥al V+olence Agency (DSVA). The teacher was arrested, arraigned, and remanded in March 2025, with his case ongoing and the next hearing set for April 22, 2025. He was granted bail for ₦300,000.
Rather than support the victims, the school management tried to suppress the issue. They banned James from the premises, spread false allegations against him, and on March 24, 2025, assaulted and confined him in the principal’s office toilet, demanding his phone to destroy evidence. James escaped when officials arrived unexpectedly. The management also turned students against him.
The DSVA insists the case will not be buried, and the teacher faces legal consequences. However, the principal, Mrs. Osunrinde, and vice principal, Mrs. Longe, refused to comment, citing the ongoing court case. The Lagos State Police also declined to speak, calling it prejudicial. The incident exposes a troubling culture of silence in Nigerian schools that shields s+x¥al pred@tors.
