Tinubu Govt Puts Presidential Boeing Jet Up for Sale in Switzerland

The Tinubu administration has listed Nigeria’s ageing Boeing 737-700 Business Jet (BBJ) for sale in Switzerland following its replacement by a newly acquired Airbus A330-200 for presidential use.

According to aircraft listing site Controller, the jet—purchased in 2005 under President Olusegun Obasanjo — is currently undergoing inspection at AMAC Aerospace in Basel. This same firm also handled the acquisition of the Airbus.

The Boeing BBJ, which has logged just under 4,000 flight hours and 1,881 landings, served as the primary aircraft for Nigerian presidents for nearly two decades. Its luxury five-zone interior includes a bedroom with an ensuite shower, a VIP office, conference and dining areas, and both first-class and business-class sections. It’s also equipped with Ka-band internet and modern avionics like ADS-B Out, CPDLC, and FANS 1/A.

In July 2024, Nigeria took delivery of a refurbished Airbus ACJ330-200, now registered as 5N-FGA, which includes a presidential suite, office, and mixed first-class and economy seating.

The new jet acquisition sparked criticism, especially after SaharaReporters revealed the government planned to spend over ₦150 billion—around $100 million at the time—on the aircraft. Critics questioned the timing and cost amid economic challenges.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga defended the purchase, citing the BBJ’s age, high maintenance costs, and safety concerns. The plane reportedly malfunctioned during a Saudi Arabia trip, raising alarms in parliament.

Although partially refurbished in July 2024, with new first-class seating and C1-C2 inspections completed, the BBJ was ultimately retired. While the aircraft is said to be in good condition, it is not enrolled in an engine maintenance program, and its engines are still “on condition”—lacking guaranteed performance coverage.
