Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday led a protest in Abuja to demand improved salaries and pension conditions for serving and retired members of the Nigeria Police Force.
The demonstration, which began at the Louis Edet Police Force Headquarters, was sparked by a viral video of a retired Superintendent of Police who lamented receiving just ₦3 million after 35 years of service. Protesters called for the removal of the police from the contributory pension scheme and the creation of a dedicated police pension board.
Chanting slogans such as “Pay police a living wage” and “Dignity for those in uniform,” the group marched to the gates of the National Assembly. They carried placards with inscriptions like “Decent Salaries Now,” “End Police Sl@very,” and “Pensions for Police Officers.”
Although denied access into the Force Headquarters, the protesters, including many retired officers, were accompanied by police escorts as they made their way to the National Assembly complex to press home their demands.
