Lagos To Be Thrown into Darkness As TCN Begins 25-Day Maintenance

Lagos residents are set to experience intermittent blackouts as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) begins a 25-day maintenance operation on the Omotoshoโ€“Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.

According to a statement from TCNโ€™s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the workโ€”approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the National Independent System Operator (NISO)โ€”involves installing Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable to enhance grid monitoring and control through the SCADA system.

The maintenance will run daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, starting July 28 to August 21, 2025. TCN said power will be restored through the affected line after each dayโ€™s work, and other circuits will remain active to help stabilize supply to Lagos.

Despite these assurances, electricity distribution companies have warned customers to prepare for disruptions.

Ikeja Electric, in a notice, said, โ€œCustomers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network during the planned TCN outage.โ€

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) issued a similar advisory, stating the work would lead to outages and load management across its coverage areas.

While the upgrade aims to improve long-term power grid reliability, Lagos residents are urged to plan for temporary interruptions during the maintenance window.
