In a shocking confession that has left many stunned, 34-year-old Deborah Ayeni has admitted to ste@ling a newborn baby from a hospital in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State — all in a desperate attempt to avoid losing her UK-based boyfriend.
Deborah, who hails from Ekiti and is not legally married but had her introduction ceremony last November, said she had been pregnant but lost the baby earlier in March. Fearing that disclosing the miscarriage might cost her the relationship, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
According to her, she walked into the hospital on a Sunday, not as a registered patient or visitor, but with one goal ,to leave with a baby. She mingled with women in the ward, casually joked with them, and when the opportunity presented itself, she took a newborn child and disappeared.
“I just wanted to take him as mine,” Deborah admitted during interrogation. “My husband is not in Nigeria; he’s based in the UK. I didn’t tell him I lost the pregnancy because I thought he would leave me.”
The incident raised serious concerns about security lapses in the hospital. Deborah confirmed that she had never registered at the facility for antenatal care and had no prior connection to the mother of the st%len child.
She claimed it was her first time committing such a crime and insisted that desperation, not w+ckedness, drove her actions.
