The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Jabi has sentenced former legislative aide and banker, Goni Yilkan, to eight years in prison for defra¥ding victims of N120.58 million under false pretence.
Justice F. E. Messiri delivered the judgment on Monday, convicting Yilkan on a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to the Advance Fee Fra¥d and Other Related Offences Act, 2006. He was sentenced without an option of fine.
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which confirmed the ruling in a statement on Tuesday, Yilkan was arraigned in October 2023 alongside one Mohammed Adamu, following investigations into a petition of fr@ud.
During the trial, EFCC’s counsel, Cosmas Ugwu, presented six witnesses and documentary evidence, while the defence, led by J.A. Oguche, called two witnesses, including Yilkan.
In his ruling, Justice Messiri held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, convicting Yilkan while discharging and acquitting his co-defendant, Adamu.
