Court Asked to Stop Goodluck Jonathan from Contesting 2027 Presidential Election

‘Abuse of court process’ – SAN dismisses suit on Jonathan’s qualification for 2027 election

‘Abuse of court process’ – SAN dismisses suit on Jonathan’s qualification for 2027 election

A fresh legal action has been filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from contesting in the 2027 presidential election.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, was filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Chukwukasi Jideobi, who is asking the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate in 2027 or any subsequent election.

The plaintiff also urged the court to bar the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate, arguing that the former president has already been sworn in twice and is therefore constitutionally disqualified under Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

As of now, the court has not delivered a ruling on the matter. The case is expected to test the legal interpretation of constitutional limits on presidential tenure once again.
