Presidency Tells Obasanjo: T+rrorism Started During Your Tenure

The Presidency has rebuked former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying he is not in a position to criticize President Bola Tinubu over the country’s worsening security situation, claiming t+rrorism first took root under Obasanjo’s administration.

The response, shared by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Mr Sunday Dare, on his verified X account, criticized Obasanjo’s suggestion that Tinubu seek foreign assistance to tackle security challenges, describing it as a surrender of Nigeria’s sovereignty rather than statesmanship.

In a post titled “Between Tinubu’s Capability And The Ignobility Of Pseudo Statesmanship,” the Presidency accused Obasanjo and other habitual presidential aspirants of ignoring Nigeria’s early security failures while attempting to judge the current administration. Dare wrote that Nigeria faces t+rrorists of all types international, regional, and local and that calling for foreign intervention is not leadership but capitulation.

The Presidency emphasized that t+rrorism is a clear reality in Nigeria, with att+cks including k+llings, k+dn@ppings, raids, and infrastructure destruction by a multilayered network of groups. These include internationally designated t+rror organizations, ISIS- and al-Qaeda-linked franchises, local extremist groups posing as b+ndits, cross-border cells, ideological insurgents, and criminal-terror hybrids, all collaborating to undermine the state.

Alleging Obasanjo’s administration incubated Boko Haram, the Presidency said early extremist cells were allowed to grow unchecked, evolving into a vi%lent insurgency, a cross-border t+rrorist network, and a regional thr+at aligned with global jihadist movements. Dare concluded that it is ironic for the former leader, under whose watch t+rrorism began, to lecture a sitting President confronting its consequences.
