Authorities in Panipat, northern India, have arrested a woman identified as Poonam for allegedly dr%wning her 6-year-old niece, Vidhi, during a family wedding ceremony on Monday.
According to local reports, Vidhi had attended the celebration with her parents, baby brother, and grandmother when she was suddenly declared missing. After an hour of frantic searching, the child’s grandmother discovered her unresponsive in a nearby storeroom.
Police say Poonam later confessed to k+lling the child, claiming she “didn’t want anyone looking more beautiful than her” at the event. Investigators believe she carried out the act when most guests were outside the house.
In a shocking development, authorities also revealed that Poonam confessed to previously k+lling three other children, including her own son and another niece cases the family had previously assumed were accidents.
Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh said the accused admitted she was “irritated by beautiful girls” and allegedly targeted children for that reason.
Police have launched a deeper investigation into the earlier d+aths.
