Paul Doyle has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison for deliberately driving into crowds during Liverpool FC’s Premier League title parade, inj¥ring 134 people aged between six months and 77 years.
The 54-year-old father of three, from West Derby, admitted in November to 31 offences involving 29 victims. The charges included dang+rous driving, 17 counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, nine counts of causing GBH with intent, and three counts of wo¥nding with intent.
Judge Andrew Menary KC told Liverpool Crown Court that Doyle’s actions amounted to a “rampage” lasting just two minutes, during which he used his grey Ford Galaxy as a “we@pon,” “driving over limbs and crushing prams,” leaving “scenes of devastation.” Dashcam footage shown in court captured Doyle swearing at fans, though he was sober at the time.
Doyle appeared emotional as victim impact statements were read. His lawyer, Simon Csoka KC, said: “He’s remorseful, ashamed and deeply sorry for all those who have suffered. He accepts full responsibility and expects no sympathy.”
Daniel Barr, who intervened to stop Doyle from driving further into the crowd, was praised for his bravery. He received a High Sheriff’s Award for Bravery and a £250 monetary reward.
Liverpool FC released a statement reminding supporters that a range of free mental health resources is available to anyone affected by the incident.
