The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has stirred fresh debate on prophecy and discernment after humorously recounting a controversial prediction linked to Nigeria’s ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
Speaking during a recent programme at RCCG’s Redemption City, Adeboye urged worshippers to exercise wisdom in handling spiritual declarations, warning against what he described as the growing number of “funny funny prophets” in society.
Without mentioning names, the cleric referred to a viral prophecy ahead of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco which suggested that Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman should be dropped from the national team. The prediction, widely shared on social media, was interpreted by many as foretelling poor performance if the Atalanta star featured.
However, events on the pitch appeared to contradict the prophecy, as Lookman scored the winning goal in Nigeria’s 2–1 opening victory over Tanzania and followed it up with a goal and two assists in a 3–2 win against Tunisia to secure qualification for the knockout stage.
Recounting the episode, Adeboye said he laughed when he read about the prophecy, noting that the player who was allegedly meant to be excluded ended up deciding the match. “I said, glory be to God,” he told the congregation.
While stressing that genuine prophecy remains sacred, Adeboye cautioned believers against elevating every claimed revelation, emphasising that true divine guidance should not be confused with sensational declarations.
He also clarified his own calling, saying, “Me? I am not a prophet, I am a pastor,” adding that his remarks were not directed at genuine messengers of God but at self-styled prophets seeking attention.
