INEC Begins Upload Of FCT Council Poll Results On IReV

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the upload of results from the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections on its Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

The polls were conducted on Saturday, February 21, across the six area councils in the nation’s capital.

Checks on the IReV portal showed that results from polling units across the FCT had started appearing online, covering both chairmanship and councillorship contests.

As of 6:28:05 p.m., 809 results out of 1,401 polling units in the Abuja Municipal Area Council had been uploaded, representing 57.74 per cent.

It was also observed that some polling unit results from the by-elections in Kano and Rivers states had been uploaded on the portal.

The FCT area council elections are widely regarded as a test run for the electoral body ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development comes days after President Bola Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill into law.

The passage of the legislation by the Senate and the House of Representatives generated widespread debate, particularly over provisions relating to real-time electronic transmission of election results.

When the House of Representatives passed the bill in December 2025, it adopted a proposal mandating real-time transmission of results to the IReV portal.

However, the Senate initially rejected the proposal in early February 2026, sparking protests and calls for lawmakers to reverse the decision.

Following public outcry, the Senate rescinded its position and approved electronic transmission of results to IReV, with a clause providing for manual collation as a fallback in the event of technological failure.

Due to differences in the versions passed by both chambers, a conference committee was constituted to harmonise the bill.

The committee subsequently adopted the Senate’s version, which allows electronic transmission of election results while retaining manual backup provisions.

Collation of results from the FCT council polls was ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
