Nigeria is p+or because we celebrate thieves — Peter Obi

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi says Nigeria’s poverty is a result of the country’s choices, not a lack of resources.

Speaking in Abuja during a visit from the leadership of the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN), Obi highlighted leadership failures and a culture that rewards corruption as the root causes.

“We are p+or because we have chosen to be p+or. We give titles and front-row seats of honour to those who steal public funds, and yet we expect to grow,” Obi said.

He compared Nigeria to Indonesia, noting that despite similar size and population, the Southeast Asian country has achieved stronger economic growth through focused leadership and clear priorities. Obi recounted that Indonesia’s leaders advised him to fight public fund theft, invest in education and healthcare, and witness the benefits as healthy, educated citizens contribute to the economy.

Obi stressed that sustainable growth comes from supporting people and small businesses. “Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) thrive where governments create stable and transparent systems,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to take action, saying, “Join the fight for a great Nigeria. Stop worshipping those who steal your money, stop giving them titles, and stand up for what is right. Vote, defend your votes, and help produce good leaders at all levels, from councillor to president, and you will see the country change.”
