“I’m a Politician, We Don’t Have Work — Rivers State commissioner nominee, Mrs Charity Deemua admits, after query over tax evasion

Drama unfolded at the Rivers State House of Assembly during the screening of commissioner nominees appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, after one of the nominees, Mrs. Charity Deemua, faced tough questioning over her tax records.

Lawmakers discovered that Mrs. Deemua had not filed a tax clearance certificate since 2018, prompting concerns from members of the Assembly during the screening exercise.

When asked to explain the gap in her tax payments, the nominee responded, “I’m a politician, we don’t have work,” suggesting she had no steady employment or income within the period under review.

However, lawmakers challenged her statement, pointing out that public appointments and political roles could still qualify as sources of income subject to taxation. During the exchange, she acknowledged previously serving in government-related roles, including as a caretaker committee member in 2025, where she confirmed she received payment.

The lawmaker noted inconsistencies in her responses, stressing that the Assembly expected accurate disclosures from nominees appearing under oath and warned that presenting conflicting information could be seen as misleading the House.
