Nigerians Were Ready To Pay N10,000 Per Litre For Fuel At A Time But It Wasn’t Available — Senate President Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to remain patient with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that ongoing economic reforms are gradually yielding results, especially in the petroleum sector.

Speaking on recent developments, he referenced past fuel scarcity in the country, noting that Nigerians previously endured extreme hardship in accessing petrol.

He said, “Since we came on board, we have not had three to five kilometres of vehicles lined up at fuel stations to buy petrol.” He also added, “There was a time Nigerians were ready to pay as much as N10,000 per litre, yet the product was not available.”

Akpabio said the current situation is different, as petrol is now largely accessible across the country, with fewer or no long queues at filling stations. He attributed this improvement to reforms in the downstream petroleum sector and increased private sector participation.

He further explained that the reforms have strengthened local refining capacity, reduced dependence on imported fuel, and improved supply stability. According to him, Nigeria is now producing more of what it consumes and even exporting petroleum products.

While acknowledging ongoing economic challenges such as inflation and rising living costs, he maintained that the reforms are necessary for long-term stability and growth.

He urged Nigerians to be patient and adopt a long-term perspective, expressing confidence that the benefits of the policies will become more visible with time.
