A 27-year-old man, Edidiong Nyojole, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Cross River State Family Court 2 sitting in Calabar after being found guilty of r@ping a 13-year-old girl.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Blessing Egwu ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case against the defendant. The court found that the offence occurred at Uwanse in Calabar South, where Nyojole and an accomplice allegedly forcefully dragged the victim into an uncompleted building and s+xually a§§aulted her.
In arriving at its decision, the court relied on medical reports, testimonies from witnesses, and an admission made by the defendant during the trial, all of which supported the prosecution’s case.
The court also ordered the convict to pay ₦1 million as compensation to the victim.
The Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), which handled the prosecution, described the judgment as a clear demonstration of the judiciary’s firm stance against s+xual vi%lence. It stated that the ruling reinforces the principle that offenders will be held fully accountable under the law.
