British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing an end to a tenure that began after Labour’s decisive victory in the 2024 general election.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said every decision he made in office was guided by what he believed was best for the country. He described becoming prime minister as the proudest moment of his life and reflected on his efforts to improve the lives of Britons during his time in government.
The outgoing leader also highlighted what he viewed as key accomplishments, including rebuilding the Labour Party after years of internal turmoil, tackling issues that had damaged the party’s reputation, and restoring public confidence in Labour’s ability to govern.
Starmer said he inherited a party facing serious political, financial and moral challenges but insisted that his leadership helped transform it into a credible governing force.
His resignation has triggered intense speculation about who will succeed him. Attention has increasingly focused on Andy Burnham, who recently won the Makerfield by-election and is expected to take his seat in Parliament.
Many political observers and Labour insiders believe Burnham is now the frontrunner to become the party’s next leader, with some reports suggesting he could emerge as the sole candidate. If that happens, Labour could have a new leader and prime minister in place by September.
