Scientists Raise Alarm as Insecticide-Resistant Malaria Mosquito Spreads Across Africa

The rapid spread of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito species that carries malaria, is raising fresh concerns among scientists and public health experts across Africa.

Unlike many malaria-transmitting mosquitoes that are commonly found in rural areas, Anopheles stephensi thrives in urban environments, breeding in artificial water containers around homes and cities. Its ability to adapt to densely populated areas has increased fears that it could trigger a resurgence of malaria in places that have made significant progress in controlling the disease.

Health experts are particularly worried because the mosquito has shown resistance to nearly all available insecticides, making many traditional mosquito control methods less effective. The growing resistance has prompted scientists to accelerate research into alternative solutions, including biological control methods, genetic technologies and the development of new insecticides.

Researchers say international collaboration will be crucial in containing the spread of the invasive species and preventing a rise in malaria cases across the continent.
