President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of Nigeria’s armed forces, with pay increases ranging from 30% to 80%. The new package, which takes effect from September 1, is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel.
The approval was announced on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Under the new structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30% salary increase. Personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will get a 50% raise, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy an 80% increase.
The salary adjustment will increase the armed forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
According to Onanuga, the President approved the pay rise in recognition of the sacrifices and bravery of military personnel fighting banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
Tinubu said the government remains committed to improving troop welfare and strengthening the military by providing modern weapons and advanced technological equipment needed to carry out their duties effectively.
Tinubu urged members of the armed forces to see the salary increase as a token of the nation’s appreciation for their service, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome those threatening its peace and security.
