2027: Nigerians excited as South East Tinubu’s group is set to meet Ohanaeze, Igbo leaders to beg Obi to step down

The Southeast chapter of the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN) has called on former Anambra State governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to step down from the 2027 presidential race and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The group’s Southeast leader, Mazi Franklin Ngoforo, made the appeal in Owerri on Saturday after a meeting focused on mobilising support for Tinubu across the five Southeast states.

Ngoforo said RHGN plans to engage prominent Igbo leaders, including the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo under Senator John Azuta Mbata, Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, to persuade Obi to reconsider his 2027 ambition.

He explained that the proposed intervention was not aimed at undermining Obi’s political influence, but at encouraging him to prioritise what he described as the long-term political interests of Ndigbo over the immediate pursuit of the presidency.

According to Ngoforo, the Southeast could benefit more from establishing a strategic political alliance with the Southwest, particularly as Tinubu would be constitutionally limited to one additional term if re-elected.

He argued that supporting the Southwest in 2027 could help the Southeast build political goodwill and secure reciprocal support when presidential power next returns to the South.

Ngoforo urged Obi to see withdrawing from the 2027 contest not as abandoning his presidential ambition, but as postponing it until a more favourable political opportunity.

“The issue is bigger than one election and bigger than one individual,” Ngoforo said, insisting that the political question before Ndigbo should be how to turn today’s alliances into tomorrow’s presidency.
